CareShield Life: who is covered and how to claim

Rules checked 17 October 2026 against CPF Board

CareShield Life is a national long-term care insurance run by CPF Board. It pays a monthly sum for life if a person develops a severe disability, meaning they cannot carry out 3 of the 6 activities of daily living.

The short answer

  • Pays monthly for life on severe disability: unable to do 3 of 6 daily activities.
  • Born in 1980 or later: covered automatically.
  • Born 1970 to 1979 with ElderShield 400: enrolled automatically in December 2021 if not already severely disabled.
  • Disability assessment: $100 at a clinic or $250 for a house call, with the first assessment free.

Is my parent covered by CareShield Life?

It depends on the year they were born.

  • Born in 1980 or later: covered automatically from age 30, or from 1 October 2020, whichever is later.
  • Born 1970 to 1979: enrolled automatically from 1 December 2021 if they held ElderShield 400 and were not severely disabled.
  • Born 1979 or earlier otherwise: joining is optional, so check whether they joined.

If your parent did not join, check whether they hold an older ElderShield policy instead.

How much does CareShield Life pay?

The monthly amount depends on the birth year and the year of the claim. For example, someone born in 1980 with a successful claim in 2026 receives $689 a month for life.

How do I claim CareShield Life for my parent?

Book a disability assessment with an MOH-accredited assessor, then submit the claim on AIC's eFASS portal with Singpass.

The assessment costs $100 at a clinic or $250 for a house call. The first assessment for CareShield Life is free.

Can my parent get CareShield Life and the Home Caregiving Grant?

Check both. They use the same 3 of 6 activities test but are separate schemes with separate rules.

The Home Caregiving Grant also has an income test and a citizenship rule of its own.
