Commode Chairs & Raised Toilet Seats Singapore

Toilet trips get harder before most other things do: lowering onto a low seat, pushing back up, and getting there in time at night. These aids make each step easier. Prices below are compared across Singapore suppliers and marketplaces, with the date each was checked.

Subsidy tip: Commodes are on AIC's SMF list of home care items. Apply and get approval before buying, and buy from an AIC-approved vendor. Grab bars beside the toilet are HDB EASE instead, installed by HDB.

Raised toilet seat: sits on the bowl and adds height, so there is less distance to lower and rise. Versions with armrests give something to push up from.

Toilet safety frame: a free-standing frame with armrests around the toilet. No drilling, useful in a rented room or before EASE grab bars are installed.

Commode chair: a chair with a removable pail, placed by the bed for night-time use or wheeled over the toilet. For someone who cannot get to the bathroom safely or in time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a commode chair covered by AIC SMF?

Yes. AIC lists commodes under the home care items that the Seniors' Mobility and Enabling Fund (SMF) can subsidise, by up to 90% for eligible Singapore Citizens and PRs aged 60 and above. Apply, with an OT or doctor's recommendation, and get approval before you buy: SMF does not pay for a device bought earlier.

Commode, raised toilet seat or toilet frame: which one?

They solve different problems. A raised toilet seat shortens the distance to sit down and stand up. A toilet safety frame adds armrests to push up from, without drilling the wall. A commode chair is a toilet that comes to the person, usually by the bed at night, when getting to the bathroom in time is the difficulty. An occupational therapist can tell you which one fits your parent and your bathroom.

Does HDB EASE cover any of these?

No. EASE installs fittings in HDB flats, such as grab bars beside the toilet and a lowered bathroom kerb. Free-standing aids like commodes and raised toilet seats are devices, which come under AIC SMF instead. Many families use both.

What should I measure before buying?

The height of the toilet bowl, the width of the space either side of it, and the bathroom doorway if a commode will be wheeled in. Older HDB bathrooms are narrow, and a frame or commode that does not fit is the most common return.
