Hospital Beds for Home Use in Singapore: Beds, Air Mattresses and Bed Rails

When a parent spends most of the day in bed, the bed becomes the place where care happens: turning, changing, eating and getting up. A hospital bed lifts to the caregiver's working height and adjusts the back and legs. Prices below are from Singapore suppliers and from marketplace sellers that ship from Singapore, with the date each was checked.

Subsidy tip: Hospital beds, and pressure relief mattresses and cushions, are on AIC's SMF list of home care items, subsidised by up to 90% for those who qualify. Apply and get approval before buying, and buy from an AIC-approved vendor. Marketplace purchases may not qualify, so check with the vendor first.

Hospital bed: electric or hand-cranked. Most Singapore suppliers include a basic mattress, delivery and assembly in the price; check, and ask about extra charges for stairs.

Pressure relief air mattress: goes on top of the bed's mattress and is plugged in all the time. For someone at risk of pressure sores; a nurse or OT can advise which type.

Bed rail and seat cushion: a rail gives something to hold when getting in and out of an ordinary bed. A pressure relief cushion protects the skin for someone who sits for long periods.

Electric Hospital Bed

From S$1350.00

Three-function electric homecare bed: back rest, leg rest and bed height adjust at the push of a button, with side rails. Raising the bed to waist height makes turning, changing and transfers easier on the caregiver's back. Most Singapore suppliers include a basic mattress, delivery and assembly; check before ordering, and ask about extra charges for stairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a hospital bed covered by AIC SMF?

Yes. AIC lists hospital beds, and pressure relief cushions and mattresses, under the home care items the Seniors' Mobility and Enabling Fund (SMF) can subsidise, by up to 90% for eligible Singapore Citizens and PRs aged 60 and above. Because a bed costs over S$1,000, this matters more here than for any other item. Apply with an OT or doctor's recommendation and wait for approval before you buy.

Electric or manual hospital bed?

Both raise the back rest, the legs and the whole bed. With an electric bed a button does it, so anyone, including the person in bed, can change position at any time. With a manual bed the caregiver turns a crank at the foot of the bed each time. Manual beds cost less and work in a power cut; electric beds save the caregiver's back when positions change many times a day.

Should I rent or buy a hospital bed?

Renting suits a short recovery, such as a few weeks after a hospital stay. If the need is likely to last many months, buying is usually cheaper, especially if SMF applies. Some Singapore suppliers also rent beds; ask them for both prices.

What does a pressure relief air mattress do?

It has cells that inflate and deflate in turn, so the points where the body presses on the bed keep changing. It is used for someone who spends most of the day in bed. It does not replace regular repositioning, and a sore that has already started needs a nurse or doctor to look at it. Ask them which type of mattress suits before buying.

Will a hospital bed fit in an HDB bedroom?

A standard single hospital bed is roughly 90cm wide and 2m long, plus space on at least one side for the caregiver to work. Measure the room, the doorway and the lift, and ask the supplier whether delivery includes carrying the bed up stairs; several charge extra for that.
