Grab bars are the single most effective home modification for preventing elderly falls — and one of the most affordable. Yet many Singapore caregivers buy the wrong type, install them in the wrong location, or miss out on government subsidies that could cover most of the cost. This guide covers everything.
Straight grab bar
The most common type. Mounted horizontally or at an angle beside the toilet, shower, or bed. Available in 30cm to 90cm lengths.

Flip-up grab bar
Folds flat against the wall when not in use — ideal for small HDB bathrooms. More expensive than straight bars but saves space.

L-shaped grab bar
Provides both vertical and horizontal grip. Good for beside the toilet where the person needs to push up and then steady themselves.

Suction cup grab bar
No installation required. Sticks to smooth tile surfaces. Cheaper and easier but less secure — only for very light support needs.

Floor-to-ceiling pole
A tension pole that requires no wall drilling. Good for renters or where wall installation is not possible. Less stable than wall-mounted.

⚠ Avoid suction-only bars for primary support
Suction cup grab bars can detach from wet tiles without warning. Use them only for very light steadying — never as the primary support for standing up or stepping into a shower. A wall-mounted bar is always safer.
Placement matters as much as the bar itself. A grab bar in the wrong location provides false confidence and may not prevent the fall it's intended to stop.

For HDB flats, professional installation is strongly recommended — and often subsidised under HDB EASE. Here's why:
DIY tip (if you must install yourself)
Use a stud finder before drilling. Mount into wall studs, not just tile and plaster. Use stainless steel screws with wall plugs rated for at least 80kg load. Test by pulling firmly before handing over to an elderly person.

Not AIC SMF — this is the common mistake
SMF does not fund grab bars. AIC's device list covers mobility aids, commodes, hospital beds, cushions, hearing aids and spectacles. Applying to AIC for a grab bar costs you the wait and the refusal, and EASE is the scheme that would have paid.

Covers the bars and the installation for HDB flat owners. HDB appoints the contractor — no need to find your own. The Government pays up to 95% of the cost; an owner-occupier pays 5% for a 1-, 2- or 3-room flat, 7.5% for a 4-room, 10% for a 5-room and 12.5% for an Executive. Confirm your own case with HDB before you count on a figure.

Grab bars are an EASE item from end to end — the bar and the labour. An eligible owner-occupier in a 3-room HDB flat pays 5% of the cost for bars fitted by HDB's own contractor. Use SMF for the equipment your loved one carries instead: a walker, a wheelchair, a commode.
